Program Note

Escapade is a lyrical and lighthearted concert piece written for young band musicians and a featured professional alto saxophone soloist. The title suggests an adventure full of energy and curiosity, with a spirit of playful mischief most often carried by the soloist. The soloist frequently imitates the lyrical phrases found in the band parts and also ventures off on its own, adding moments of spontaneity and personality while the ensemble provides a supportive foundation. Written at the Grade 1 level for band, the piece is designed to help young players build confidence and enjoy the experience of making music alongside an advanced musician.
