Until the Peace Comes

Written for the Atlas Quartet.

Until the Peace Comes

Program Notes

Until the Peace Comes conveys a struggle to find peace through three connected movements. A few works by Salvador Dali in a collection called the Biblia Sacra inspired this quartet. One work in particular titled “The Spirit is Willing, but the Flesh is Weak” was especially useful in the process of writing. As I wrote this quartet I realized I captured the struggle to find rest. Though progress was made toward experiencing a sense of peace, I did not want to provide a full victory.  For that reason, I used the main melody from the middle movement of this work in another work for brass band titled “The Spirit is Willing”.  By combining this prayerful melody with another melody that is eager to provide rest, I finally give a sense of victory that this quartet is longing to experience.
