"...we can see what the artist, as a member of the human race, standing at a certain point in its history, knew and understood of reality. Reality is the present; it also encompasses the past. It is the things seen, and the things not seen but nevertheless very real, like love, hate, justice, beauty, goodness and evil. So if a painter paints something he will always choose what he thinks is relevant, important for him or for us. If he paints the past he will do so because he judges that past to be meaningful for us now. And in doing so he will show his understanding of it. So if an artist depicts the Christmas story, he does so not only because it happened many years ago, but because he understands that to be still of great value and importance to us. And he will show what his understanding of it is. "
